Train to the clouds
Code: NOATOUR05
Duration: Full dayThe train crosses 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 2 locks (places where the convoy climbs and descends from a height) and 2 zig-zag; until it reaches a height of 4.000 metres. The viaduct La Polvorilla, with an overall length of 224 metres, is one of the most moving moments in the trip, reaching almost 70 metres above river level; it is a huge metallic structure of 1.600 tons; which peculiarity is to be curved and lack of rails.
The train leaves from Salta's railway station in town (1.187m above sea level) towards San Antonio de los Cobres. The Gulch Del Toro offers the passenger the most incredible combination of colours in the mountains. At the latitude of El Alisal the rail adventure begins; surprisingly, at this point the first zig-zag appears. Little by little, and on our left hand will appear the imposing Nevado de Cachi (6.720 metres high). We continue trip from Muñano in the direction of San Antonio de los Cobres. The town is located at the foot of the Cerro Terciopelo, of cigar colour and soft aspect. Mina Concordia is the next stop and the previous before finally reaching La Polvorilla.
Sometimes clouds are formed below the viaduct, fact which allows them to be contemplated from the above; and this is the reason for the name given to the tour ("Train to the Clouds"). The duration of the whole journey is 14h 30', enough time to enjoy a truly indelible show.
